Germany, Mexico Yet to Approve Femi Fani-Kayode and Reno Omokri as Ambassadors

Femi Fani-Kayode and Reno Omokri

Weeks after President Bola Ahmed Tinubu announced the deployment of 65 ambassadors and high commissioners on March 6, 2026, Femi Fani-Kayode (nominated for Germany) and Reno Omokri (nominated for Mexico) remain in Abuja with no clear timeline for when or if they will be accepted.

The Federal Ministry of Foreign Affairs has confirmed that agrément has been secured from at least 10 countries, including the United Kingdom, United States, France, Ireland, Qatar, Benin Republic, Ethiopia, Djibouti, Senegal, and Sierra Leone.

However, responses from Germany, Mexico, and several other nations are still pending.

Fani-Kayode and Omokri are among the most high-profile non-career appointees on the list, and their pending status has continued to attract public attention. The agrément process, which requires formal approval from host countries before an ambassador can assume duty, remains ongoing.

Diplomatic sources note that such delays can stem from internal reviews by receiving countries or timing considerations linked to the remaining period of the sending government.

The Tinubu administration has roughly 13 months left in office until May 29, 2027.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has commenced induction for the ambassadors-designate, but none can take up their posts without the required agrément. In some cases, nominees may be considered for redeployment if approvals are not granted.

Further updates are expected as more host countries respond to Nigeria’s requests
