Ibrahim Shekarau Leaves PDP, Set for Possible Return to APC

Former Kano State Governor, Ibrahim Shekarau, has officially resigned from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), signaling a fresh political realignment ahead of future elections.

Shekarau announced his resignation on April 19, 2026, at his residence in Kano, following extensive consultations with his political associates and supporters. In a formal letter addressed to his ward chairman, he stated that his exit from the PDP takes immediate effect.

He explained that the decision was reached after “wide and extensive deliberations” within his political group, with plans to pursue his political ambitions under a different platform.

Reports indicate that his move is closely tied to ongoing internal challenges within the PDP, which have triggered defections and growing uncertainty within the opposition party.

Further developments suggest that Shekarau is expected to return to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), as signs of his alignment with the party have already emerged.

A two-term governor of Kano State (2003–2011), Shekarau remains a significant political figure in northern Nigeria, and his latest move is likely to reshape political dynamics in the state ahead of the 2027 elections.
