The Nigeria Police Force has condemned the fatal shooting of a suspect, Mene Ogidi, in Effurun, Delta State, assuring the public that justice will be served.

In a statement issued on April 28, 2026, the Force Public Relations Officer, Anthony Okon Placid, confirmed that the incident occurred on April 26 in Effurun.

According to preliminary findings, operatives attached to the Effurun Area Command had responded to credible intelligence from Benin Motor Park along the Warri–Sapele Expressway. The information indicated that a suspect had been apprehended by members of a transport union while attempting to waybill a parcel containing a Beretta pistol loaded with four rounds of ammunition.

However, while efforts were underway to take the suspect into lawful custody, the team leader, Nuhu Usman, allegedly discharged his firearm in violation of established regulations, resulting in the suspect’s death.

The police leadership has since ordered the immediate transfer of the officer and his team to Force Headquarters in Abuja. They are expected to face the Force Disciplinary Committee for summary disciplinary measures and possible prosecution.

The Inspector-General of Police extended condolences to the family of the deceased, emphasizing that the Force maintains a zero-tolerance policy on extrajudicial actions and abuse of authority.
