Sowore Alleges Facebook Is Colluding With Government to Suppress Nigerians

Sowore, Facebook

Human rights activist and politician, Omoyele Sowore, has accused Facebook of allegedly working in alignment with the Nigerian government to suppress free expression on its platform.

In a statement shared on social media, Sowore claimed he had been demonetized by Facebook for a long time, adding that the platform restricts his ability to go live and limits his reach.

According to him, such actions are part of a broader system of control over online speech in Nigeria.

“Facebook demonetized me a long time ago because they didn’t like what I was saying. They allowed the government to suppress you by making sure that your account cannot go live beyond a period of time,” he said.

He further alleged that Facebook is “in unholy alliance with the federal government,” insisting that the platform benefits from Nigerian users while restricting political expression.

“Whether they like it or not, we’re helping them to make money. 40 million Nigerians log onto Facebook daily—that is more people than have ever voted in an election in this country,” Sowore added.
