Outrage as NEPA Official Says Nigerians Use a Week’s Electricity in One Hour

A viral video circulating on social media has sparked debate after a power official in Bayelsa State attributed erratic electricity supply to the consumption habits of residents.

In the video, the official of National Electric Power Authority (NEPA), responding to a question about why communities sometimes receive as little as one hour of electricity, claimed that residents overload the system whenever power is restored.

According to the official, many households immediately switch on high-energy-consuming appliances such as freezers, washing machines, and water pumps once electricity is available. He argued that this surge in demand causes rapid depletion of available energy, limiting how long power can be sustained.

“The way people use the light is the problem,” the official said. “Once they see light, they turn on everything. Energy meant to last a week is consumed in just one hour.”
