Peter Obi Faces Tight Deadline to Switch Party Ahead of 2027 Presidential Race

Peter Obi

Former presidential candidate Peter Obi may still have a pathway to contest the 2027 election outside the African Democratic Congress (ADC), but the legal window to do so is rapidly closing, with less than a week remaining.

Obi, who formally registered with the ADC in Anambra State on March 7, 2026, has maintained that he will not participate in any primary election process tainted by inducement or irregularities. However, Nigeria’s electoral framework now places significant constraints on any potential defection.

Under the guidelines set by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), political parties are required to submit their membership registers at least 21 days before conducting primaries. Only individuals listed in those registers are eligible to contest.

INEC has scheduled party primaries between April 23 and May 30, 2026. This timeline effectively narrows Obi’s options:

Parties conducting early May primaries have already closed their registers.

Mid-May primaries required submission between April 24 and May 9.

The final deadline for parties holding primaries on May 30 falls on May 9, 2026.

This means any party that has already submitted its membership register or commenced primaries is no longer an option for Obi.

For a successful switch, Obi would need to immediately resign from the ADC, join a party yet to finalize its register, and ensure his inclusion before the final cutoff date.

With the May 9 deadline fast approaching, the remaining window for any political realignment is now measured in days, placing mounting pressure on the former Anambra governor to make a decisive move if he intends to run under a different platform in 2027.
