The leadership status of the National Democratic Coalition (NDC) has been legally affirmed following a Federal High Court judgment that ordered the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to recognise the party and its officials.

The development stems from a prolonged dispute between the NDC and Independent National Electoral Commission over the party’s registration and official logo.

According to party sources, the NDC was initiated in 2017 by former Bayelsa State governor, Seriake Dickson, alongside other stakeholders, during the tenure of former INEC Chairman, Mahmood Yakubu. After its registration process began, INEC reportedly raised concerns over the party’s logo—two fingers raised in the air—arguing it bore resemblance to the symbol of the All Progressives Congress.

INEC subsequently directed the party to change the logo or risk losing recognition. The NDC, however, maintained that its symbol had no similarity to that of the APC, insisting the concern was unfounded.

When efforts to resolve the disagreement failed, INEC moved to withdraw recognition of the party, prompting the NDC to seek legal redress at the Federal High Court.

In 2025, the court delivered judgment in favour of the NDC, ruling that the party’s logo was distinct and did not infringe on that of any other political party. The court further ordered INEC to recognise the NDC as a valid political party, accept its logo, and formally acknowledge its leadership.

Following the ruling, INEC—now under the leadership of Prof. Amupitan—complied with the court order and updated its records accordingly. The NDC’s leadership is currently listed on INEC’s official platform with the notation “By Court Order.”

Legal observers note that INEC was the sole party with the standing to appeal the judgment but did not do so within the stipulated timeframe, effectively allowing the ruling to stand.

As a result, the recognition of the NDC and its leadership is now firmly backed by law, with no pending legal challenges.
