The Nigerian Senate has strongly condemned the recent abduction of students and teachers in Borno State and Oyo State, describing the incidents as a direct attack on the future of Nigeria.
Senate Leader, Opeyemi Bamidele, made the statement on Sunday, May 17, 2026, while reacting to the kidnapping of scores of students and teachers in separate attacks within 24 hours in both states.
According to the Senate leader, the growing wave of kidnappings and attacks on schools further highlights the urgent need for the establishment of state police across Nigeria.
“The incessant abduction of students and teachers is a tragic national concern that negates our national development indices. We cannot and must not allow it to continue,” Bamidele stated.
He revealed that the National Assembly is already at an advanced stage in the constitutional amendment process required to establish state police in Nigeria.
Bamidele explained that once the National Assembly completes its part of the process, the proposal would be transmitted to state Houses of Assembly for approval before implementation.
The Senate also called on both federal and state governments to strengthen the Safe School Initiative and improve security around educational institutions nationwide.
The reaction follows recent attacks in Oyo State where gunmen reportedly abducted students and teachers from schools in Oriire Local Government Area, as well as a similar attack in Borno State where dozens of students were reportedly kidnapped by terrorists.
The development has continued to spark nationwide concern over insecurity, school safety, and the rising number of out-of-school children across the country.
