Bandits Attack Kwara Community, Abduct Emir’s Family Members, Set Palace Ablaze

Suspected bandits have attacked Yashikira community in Baruten Local Government Area of Kwara State, abducting members of the Emir’s family and setting part of the palace ablaze.

The attack, which reportedly happened between 12:00 a.m. and 2:00 a.m. on Monday, saw heavily armed men storm the border town in large numbers, shooting sporadically before advancing towards the palace and a nearby police formation.

According to reports, three wives and four children of the traditional ruler, Alhaji Umar Seriki, were among those abducted during the raid.

Residents said the attackers overpowered local security operatives around the palace before forcing their way into the inner section of the royal residence.

The gunmen also attacked the Yashikira Police Divisional Headquarters, but officers on duty reportedly repelled the assault.

The Kwara State Police Command had earlier confirmed that 10 people were abducted during the coordinated attack, while tactical teams comprising police operatives, military personnel, forest guards and local vigilantes had been deployed to comb surrounding forests and suspected hideouts.

The Commissioner of Police in the state, Ojo Adekimi, has ordered a full-scale rescue operation, assuring residents that security agencies are working to ensure the safe return of the victims.

As of the time of reporting, efforts are ongoing to rescue the abducted victims and restore calm to the affected community.
