The Federal Government has directed Ministries, Departments, and Agencies to stop placing civil servants on mandatory three-month leave before retirement.
The directive was issued by the Head of the Civil Service of the Federation, Didi Walson-Jack, who clarified that the Public Service Rules do not support automatic pre-retirement leave.
According to the circular, retiring officers are only required to give three months’ notice before retirement, attend a one-month pre-retirement seminar, and use the remaining period to process service records and pension documents.
Walson-Jack said officers remain public servants during the notice period and must continue performing their duties unless they are attending approved retirement programmes or have been granted leave under existing rules.
All MDAs have now been instructed to stop forcing retiring officers to leave their posts before their official retirement dates.
