‘Unify Under Peter Obi’ — Aisha Yesufu Sends Strong Message to Opposition Parties

Political activist Aisha Yesufu has called on opposition parties in Nigeria to unite behind Peter Obi ahead of the 2027 general election, arguing that a united front offers the best chance of defeating President Bola Tinubu.

In a statement titled “Dear Opposition — Unify Under Peter Obi,” Yesufu appealed to supporters of the Labour Party, Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP), African Democratic Congress (ADC), and independent political groups to rally behind a single presidential candidate.

According to her, the opposition’s major challenge in the 2023 presidential election was not a lack of votes but the division of those votes among multiple candidates.

She argued that President Tinubu was declared winner with 36 percent of the vote, while the combined votes of opposition candidates exceeded that figure, insisting that unity rather than separate campaigns would be key to success in 2027.

Yesufu described Obi as the opposition figure with the strongest electoral record and broad national appeal, noting that his campaign won Lagos State during the 2023 election.

She maintained that backing Obi would not require political parties to abandon their identities, platforms or candidates for other elective positions, but rather to agree on a common presidential candidate while retaining their individual structures.

The activist also called on opposition party officials, organisers, fundraisers and strategists to coordinate their efforts ahead of the next general election, saying a united opposition would be better positioned to challenge the ruling party.
