The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has condemned the alleged mob killing of Ibrahim Mbaye, a student of the University of Jos (UNIJOS), who reportedly died after being brutally assaulted over allegations of stealing a missing iPhone.
In a statement, NANS President Akinteye Babatunde described the incident as “heartbreaking” and insisted that no accusation, regardless of its nature, justifies jungle justice or extrajudicial punishment. He alleged that Mbaye was beaten, humiliated, and locked inside a room before his death, adding that the reportedly missing iPhone was never recovered from him.
The student body welcomed the arrest of some suspects by the Plateau State Police Command but called for a thorough, impartial, and speedy investigation. NANS urged security agencies to ensure that everyone involved is prosecuted, stressing that justice must be served to deter future acts of mob violence.
The association also extended its condolences to Mbaye’s family, friends, and the University of Jos community, reiterating that no student should ever lose their life to jungle justice and calling on Nigerians to reject mob violence in all its forms.
