The Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project (SERAP) has called on President Bola Tinubu to order an investigation into the alleged diversion and mismanagement of more than ₦6.79 billion belonging to the Nigeria Police Force and the Federal Ministry of Police Affairs. The organisation also urged the government to recover missing firearms and ammunition identified in the Auditor-General’s report.
In a letter dated August 1, 2026, SERAP asked President Tinubu to direct the Attorney-General of the Federation, Lateef Fagbemi, the Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Disu, and relevant anti-corruption agencies to thoroughly investigate the allegations and prosecute anyone found responsible. The group said the findings were contained in the 2025 Annual Report of the Auditor-General of the Federation.
According to SERAP, the report highlighted alleged payments for projects that were never executed, abandoned contracts, inflated contract costs, irregular procurement, unretired cash advances, and payments for services not rendered. It also raised concerns over missing firearms and ammunition, the unauthorised release of police exhibits, and poor storage of recovered weapons, warning that the issues pose serious risks to public safety and national security.
SERAP gave the Federal Government seven days to act on its recommendations, warning that it would consider legal action if no concrete steps are taken to investigate the allegations, recover the missing funds and firearms, and hold those responsible accountable.
