Presidential candidate of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), Atiku Abubakar, has raised the alarm over a suspicious credit transaction into one of his private bank accounts domiciled with a leading Nigerian commercial bank, and has alerted security agencies to investigate the incident.
The disclosure was made in a statement issued on Friday by Atiku’s Senior Special Assistant on Public Communication, Phrank Shaibu. According to the statement, the transfer originated from an individual completely unknown to the former Vice President and carried the narration: “Contribution Electioneering Campaign.”
Shaibu stressed that neither Atiku nor his campaign solicited, authorised, or has any knowledge of the individual or organisation behind the payment.
“The circumstances surrounding the transfer are deeply troubling to His Excellency,” the statement said, noting that the account is strictly private and that its details are not in the public domain.
He questioned how unknown persons gained access to the confidential banking details of a private citizen, warning that if the private banking information of a former Vice President and leading presidential candidate could be obtained and used for undisclosed purposes, then the financial privacy of ordinary Nigerians is equally at risk.
The statement further suggested that the account details may have been accessed through individuals with privileged access, describing such a possibility as “a grave abuse of power” capable of exposing the account holder to kidnappers, terrorists, bandits, fraudsters, and other criminal elements.
Describing the incident as the latest in a series of suspicious developments ahead of the 2027 general elections, Shaibu urged Nigerians not to be distracted by what he called “tired tactics that smack of character assassination.”
“Such desperate antics have failed before and will fail again,” the statement added, maintaining that the Waziri of Adamawa remains focused on offering Nigerians credible leadership and practical solutions to the country’s challenges.
