The son-in-law of veteran journalist and former Managing Director of the defunct Monitor newspaper, Ayo Akinyemi, has reportedly been kidnapped in Ikenne Local Government Area of Ogun State.
The victim, identified as Oreoluwa Osunuga, who owns a farm settlement in the area, was abducted by gunmen on Sunday afternoon while driving out of the farm to purchase fuel and deliver some poultry products.
According to reports, the gunmen intercepted Osunuga, forcefully whisked him away and abandoned his vehicle at the scene. As of the time of filing this report, his whereabouts remained unknown to his family and staff.
Sources said the kidnappers later contacted the family using Osunuga’s mobile phone and reportedly demanded N500 million as ransom for his release.
Following the incident, the Divisional Police Officer of the Ikenne Divisional Police Headquarters visited the scene with his men. The victim’s 2017 Toyota Highlander was recovered and taken to the police station.
The Ogun State Commissioner of Police, Bode Ojajuni, confirmed the incident when contacted at about 9:50 p.m. on Sunday.
Ojajuni said the police had commenced proactive measures to rescue the victim, assuring that efforts were ongoing and that there was progress in the operation.
