The Ghana Police Service has arrested a Nigerian national, identified as Augustine Okechuku Maazi, after security operatives reportedly foiled an alleged attempt by a gang to rob three banks in the Labone area of Accra.
According to the police, they received intelligence at about 10:45am on August 13 that a group of suspected robbers was preparing to attack GCB Bank, Ecobank and Zenith Bank branches located in Labone.
The police said officers were immediately deployed to the area, where they reportedly spotted the suspects in two vehicles parked near the banks.
Upon sighting the security operatives, one of the vehicles allegedly sped away. Police officers gave chase and arrested Maazi, while another occupant reportedly escaped.
The occupants of the second vehicle also allegedly attempted to flee while firing at the police. The officers reportedly returned fire, resulting in the deaths of two suspected robbers.
The police said they recovered two vehicles — a Toyota Highlander with registration number GS-1434-18 and a Hyundai Tucson with registration number GS-7915-17 — as well as a blow pistol.
Maazi remains in police custody and is assisting with the ongoing investigation, according to the Ghana Police Service.
The bodies of the two deceased suspects have been deposited at the morgue for preservation, identification and autopsy as investigations continue.
