Pastor Jerry Eze has opened up about the difficult early years of his marriage, revealing that frequent conflicts and his wife’s struggle with anger once made him consider ending the relationship.
The popular Nigerian pastor shared the experience while speaking about marriage, recounting how difficult the early stages of his relationship were and how he sometimes feared his wife’s reactions during disagreements.
According to Jerry Eze, shortly after their marriage, a simple question he asked his wife triggered an angry reaction. He recalled an incident in the kitchen where she moved cups and plates with one hand, causing them to crash to the floor.
Shocked by what he described as an unfamiliar display of anger, the pastor said he packed his belongings and left the house because he feared the situation could escalate into physical violence.
He revealed that similar incidents continued, making it difficult for him to communicate freely with his wife without worrying about how she would react.
Eze also recalled an incident during a trip to London when his wife became upset after discovering that he had gone to another shop while she was away. According to him, she eventually returned home without him, leaving him to find his way back alone.
The experience, he said, prompted him to change his ticket and return home.
The pastor disclosed that at one point, after several attempts to make the marriage work, he prayed and told God that he was ready to end the relationship.
However, he said he received a revelation that completely changed his perspective on marriage.
According to him, God told him: “This marriage is not a destination. It is an assignment. And the extent to which you solve this assignment will determine your promotion in destiny.”
Eze said the message changed his mindset from expecting his wife to meet his emotional needs and behave exactly as he wanted, to seeing himself as having a responsibility to love, communicate properly, control his reactions and contribute to solving the challenges within the marriage.
He stressed that the transformation was not immediate and that the marriage did not suddenly become perfect.
However, he said his wife is now “one of the sweetest people you will ever meet,” noting that both of them had to grow through the experience.
The pastor encouraged couples facing marital difficulties to change their perspective and understand that every marriage comes with its own unique challenges and responsibilities.
He likened marriages to different kinds of assignments, saying that while some people may have easier challenges, others may receive more difficult ones.
Eze concluded that changing one’s mindset about marriage can also change the way marital problems are approached and addressed.
