A fire outbreak has engulfed part of the SPAR Calabar Mall in Cross River State, sending thick smoke into the air and triggering panic among shoppers, staff and residents around the area.
The incident occurred on Saturday morning, August 22, with reports indicating that the fire was preceded by a minor gas or fuel explosion inside the shopping complex.
Several fire service trucks have arrived at the scene as emergency responders work to contain the blaze and prevent it from spreading to other sections of the mall.
Reports from the scene indicate that shops including a pharmacy, clothing outlet, perfumery and phone shop are located in the affected section, with properties feared destroyed by the fire.
The cause of the incident, the full extent of the damage and possible casualties have not been officially confirmed.
