Abia State Governor, Alex Otti, has urged residents of the state to remain steadfast in faith and hope, assuring them that the aspirations of the people would be fulfilled in God’s time.
Otti made the call on Sunday, August 23, 2026, during an interdenominational Thanksgiving Service held at the Okpara Square Event Centre in Umuahia as part of activities marking the 35th anniversary of Abia State.
The service, themed “The Rise of a New Abia,” brought together government officials, religious leaders, dignitaries and residents to commemorate the creation of the state in 1991.
The governor said the decision to begin the anniversary celebration with thanksgiving was a reflection of his administration’s belief in the power of prayer and the contributions of religious leaders who have consistently prayed for the progress of Abia.
Otti recalled that shortly after the 2023 governorship election, his administration commenced its tenure with a thanksgiving service tagged “Returning Abia to God.”
According to him, the state’s journey of development remains connected to faith, patience and divine guidance.
“This State is not called God’s Own State for nothing. At its own time, the Bible records, it makes everything beautiful. So, sometimes, you will be struggling, you will be praying, don’t give up. Because if you give up, that will be the end,” Otti said.
The governor thanked religious leaders for their continued prayers and support, while praying that thanksgiving would continue in their homes and ministries.
Otti also congratulated Osun State Governor, Ademola Adeleke, on his recent electoral victory. He noted that Adeleke has a connection to Abia through his mother, who he said hails from Akwete Ndoki in Ukwa East Local Government Area.
The governor welcomed former Cross River State governor, former senator and former minister, Liyel Imoke, to the thanksgiving service and expressed appreciation to all dignitaries, clergymen and Abians who attended the event.
As part of the ceremony, Otti led the congregation in observing a minute’s silence in honour of the late former governors of Abia State, Ogbonnaya Onu, Chinyere Ike Nwosu and Anthony Obi.
He prayed for the repose of their souls and those of other faithful departed.
The thanksgiving service formed part of activities marking Abia’s 35th anniversary, with the state government highlighting faith, development and the vision of a renewed Abia as key themes of the celebration.
