The Nigerian Air Force (NAF) has launched a new aerial operation across the north-western states to target “terrorists and other criminal elements” terrorising the region.
In a statement posted on its X account, the NAF said the operation, codenamed Operation Iron Hand, would support ground troops conducting operations to restore security in Zamfara, Katsina, Sokoto, Kebbi and Kaduna states, where troops are operating under Operation Fansan Yamma.
The NAF said the operation demonstrates the commitment of the Nigerian Air Force to using airpower and coordinating with other security agencies to disrupt the activities of criminal groups and restore peace across the affected areas.
In a separate statement, the Nigerian Army also announced plans to eliminate members of the Lakurawa group operating in Sokoto and Kebbi states.
In May, the Islamic State in the Sahel claimed responsibility for a series of attacks in Sokoto and Kebbi states.
