Political commentator Randy Peterz has appealed to the presidential candidate of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), Atiku Abubakar, to consider making a political sacrifice for the country by supporting Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, Peter Obi.
Peterz made the appeal while assessing the current political landscape, arguing that Obi remains, in his view, the most popular candidate in the country’s political space.
“From all indications in today’s political space, the most popular candidate is Mr Peter Obi,” Peterz said.
He urged Nigerian politicians to prioritise the country’s interests over personal political ambitions, stressing that there are moments when political leaders must make sacrifices for the greater good.
According to him, Atiku has an opportunity to demonstrate statesmanship by putting the interests of Nigerians ahead of his ambition to become president.
“That’s why I appeal to the ADC presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar, to understand that you can take power and still lose the hearts of the people,” he said.
Peterz further argued that occupying the presidency should not be the sole measure of a politician’s legacy, noting that Atiku could earn a lasting place in the hearts of Nigerians by taking a statesmanlike position.
“You do not need to be president for your name to be engraved in the hearts of Nigerians. He has an opportunity to become a statesman,” he added.
