Federal Capital Territory Minister Nyesom Wike has stepped up his political engagement in Rivers State ahead of the 2027 general elections, insisting that his frequent visits to the state are aimed at maintaining contact with his political base.
Wike, who spoke during his monthly media parley in Port Harcourt on Wednesday, said he would not remain in Abuja and rely solely on reports from political actors in the state.
The minister explained that his visits were necessary to monitor developments on the ground and ensure that his political interests in Rivers State were properly protected ahead of the 2027 elections.
According to him, his activities in the state should not be interpreted as an attempt to abandon his responsibilities as FCT Minister or relocate from Abuja.
Wike said he considered both the FCT and Rivers State important to him, stressing that he needed to remain connected with the people of his home state.
He also made it clear that he would actively work against the emergence of former Vice President Atiku Abubakar as president in 2027.
“Do you want me to fold my hand for Atiku Abubakar to come and win the election?” Wike asked.
The former Rivers State governor’s latest comments highlight his determination to remain politically active in the state as preparations for the 2027 elections gradually intensify.
Wike has repeatedly maintained that his political involvement in Rivers is necessary to protect his influence and ensure that developments in the state do not take place without his knowledge.
