A Nigerian lady has sparked discussion online after expressing frustration over the expectations placed on her to conduct a traditional wedding ceremony for relatives she says played no role in her upbringing.
In a viral video, the lady questioned why she should be required to return to her village and fulfil traditional marriage obligations for family members who, according to her, never contributed financially or otherwise to her education, upbringing or welfare.
She said she found it difficult to understand why relatives who did not support her while growing up would still be expected to receive wedding-related items and participate in the payment of her bride price.
I cannot believe that no single member of my family has contributed anything to take care of me or my family from my village,” she said.
According to her, none of her relatives from the village contributed towards her education or upbringing, yet tradition requires her to return to them when she is getting married.
She further expressed anger over the expectation that she would have to “put on a show” for them by organising the traditional ceremony, presenting gifts and participating in other customary activities.
The bare thought of it pisses me off. I cannot believe it. E dey pain me say these people no contribute anything to my life, but because of tradition, I literally have to go there and put on a show for them,” she added.
