A five-storey residential building has collapsed in Delhi’s Satya Niketan area, trapping dozens of university students who were inside a hostel at the time of the incident.
The building reportedly came down on Sunday while students were in their rooms, taking advantage of the weekend when there were no classes. Multiple reports said about 50 people were inside the building when the collapse occurred.
Rescue teams rushed to the scene as emergency workers and bystanders worked to remove debris and search for those trapped beneath the rubble.
At least four people were reportedly killed, while several others sustained injuries and were evacuated to hospitals for medical treatment.
The incident also prompted authorities to evacuate a neighbouring building as a precaution against any further structural danger.
Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta said every effort was being made to rescue those trapped, while assuring that those found responsible would face consequences.
Meanwhile, Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed sadness over the incident and offered condolences to the families of those who lost their loved ones, while praying for the speedy recovery of the injured.
Police have launched an investigation into the collapse and were reportedly searching for the owner of the building as authorities worked to determine what caused the structure to give way.
