An eight-month-old infant is among four members of a suspected terrorist family who have fled an insurgent enclave in Borno State and surrendered to troops of Operation HADIN KAI.
The four individuals reportedly surrendered to soldiers along the Gwoza–Limankara road at about 1:35 p.m. on September 6, according to military sources cited by Zagazola Makama.
Preliminary findings indicate that the group escaped from the Hiduwa terrorist enclave located in the Mandara Mountains in Gwoza Local Government Area.
The escapees reportedly told troops that severe shortages of basic necessities within the enclave forced them to abandon the camp in search of safety.
The development comes amid ongoing military operations aimed at weakening terrorist groups and encouraging individuals within insurgent-controlled areas to abandon the camps and return to safer communities.
The four individuals, including the infant, have been taken into military custody for screening and further investigation as authorities work to establish their identities, circumstances and possible links to the terrorist group.
The military is expected to continue its assessment of the surrendered persons as part of efforts to gather intelligence and understand activities within the insurgents’ hideouts in the area.
