Two images making the rounds online have left many Nigerians asking an uncomfortable question: How did we get here?

One shows a small animal hospital in the United Kingdom. The other shows a government general hospital in Kwara, where people go to seek medical treatment.

The difference in infrastructure is difficult to ignore.

The UK facility appears clean, modern and well-maintained, while the Lagos hospital appears to show ageing infrastructure and a facility in need of significant improvement.

That contrast has reignited a painful conversation about Nigeria’s public healthcare system. For millions of Nigerians, government hospitals are the most affordable and sometimes the only option when illness strikes. Yet many continue to face challenges ranging from ageing facilities to inadequate equipment and poor maintenance.

Nobody is suggesting that animals should not receive quality care. But the images inevitably raise an uncomfortable question:

Why can a facility caring for animals in one country appear better equipped and maintained than a public hospital caring for human beings in another?

Of course, two photographs cannot tell the full story of healthcare in either country. Nigeria has modern and well-run hospitals, just as the UK has facilities that may not look as impressive.

But these images highlight something that cannot be dismissed: healthcare is not just about doctors and medicine. Infrastructure matters. Equipment matters. The environment matters. And so does the dignity of the patient.

Nigeria has highly skilled medical professionals. They deserve facilities that enable them to deliver the standard of care Nigerians deserve.

  1. The hospital is General Hospital,Oro in Kwara State and not Lagos. The person in black appears to be Governor Abdul- Rahman Abdulrazaq of Kwara State. Why is your reporter fixated with Lagos?
