The United States has further strengthened its defence partnership with Nigeria following the delivery of military equipment to the Nigerian Air Force.
A U.S. Air Force C-17 Globemaster III aircraft transported the equipment to Nigeria over the weekend under an ongoing Foreign Military Sales agreement between both countries.
The U.S. Africa Command (AFRICOM), in a statement shared on its official X handle on Thursday, said the delivery reflected the growing security cooperation between Washington and Abuja.
AFRICOM said the equipment would support Nigeria’s efforts to improve its capacity to confront terrorism and other security threats affecting the country and the wider region.
The delivery comes at a time when Nigeria is intensifying military operations against terrorist and insurgent groups, particularly in the North-East, while also confronting growing security challenges in other parts of the country.
Beyond the equipment itself, the deployment of a U.S. Air Force C-17 highlights the expanding logistical and operational dimensions of the bilateral security relationship.
The United States and Nigeria have in recent years increased cooperation in areas including intelligence sharing, military training, counter-terrorism support and defence equipment.
The latest development is therefore expected to further enhance Nigeria’s military capabilities as its armed forces continue efforts to tackle terrorist and criminal networks across several regions.
AFRICOM described the delivery as “partnership in action,” signalling Washington’s continued commitment to supporting Nigeria’s security objectives while deepening defence ties with Abuja.
