Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has publicly thrown his weight behind his deputy, Obafemi Hamzat, as his preferred successor ahead of the 2027 governorship election, urging residents of Ikorodu Division to support the All Progressives Congress (APC).
Sanwo-Olu made his position known during a meeting with traditional rulers and political leaders in Ikorodu, where he also canvassed support for President Bola Tinubu’s re-election bid.
The governor described Hamzat’s emergence as the APC governorship candidate as an opportunity to sustain the development trajectory of Lagos, urging party members and residents to work towards securing victory for the former deputy governor.
Sanwo-Olu said he would personally work for Hamzat’s election as the next governor of Lagos, while also challenging Ikorodu residents to fulfil their pledge of delivering 250,000 votes for Tinubu and other APC candidates in 2027.
According to him, continuity in governance remains important to sustaining ongoing development projects and policies across Lagos.
Hamzat, who was also present at the meeting, appealed to traditional rulers, political leaders and residents to participate actively in the 2027 election and vote for the APC.
He argued that Lagos could not afford to “experiment” with its leadership, insisting that continuity was necessary to maintain the state’s development momentum.
The deputy governor also assured the people of Ikorodu that the concerns raised during the meeting would receive appropriate attention, stressing that the division remained an important part of the state’s development plans.
The meeting further highlighted the growing mobilisation of traditional and political structures ahead of the 2027 elections, with monarchs in the division expressing support for Tinubu and Hamzat.
The Ayangburen of Ikorodu, Oba Kabiru Shotobi, pledged the support of the traditional institution, while the Ranodu of Imota, Oba Ajibade Bakare-Agoro, endorsed Hamzat and praised his working relationship with Sanwo-Olu.
Political leaders, including Senator Tokunbo Abiru and Babajimi Benson, also expressed confidence in Hamzat’s leadership credentials and assured the APC leadership of strong electoral support from Ikorodu.
With Sanwo-Olu now openly campaigning for his deputy, the Ikorodu meeting signals an early push by the Lagos APC to consolidate its political structure and secure continuity ahead of the 2027 governorship contest.
