A tripartite team comprising the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), the Media and Civil Society Organisations (CSOs) has visited Nkanu East Local Government Area of Enugu State to assess projects executed by the state government and the local government council.
The delegation, led by the NLC Chairman, Comrade Barrister Fabian Nwigbo, was received by the Secretary of Nkanu East LGA, Rev. Felix Okoye, on behalf of the Council Chairman, Hon. Sydney Okechukwu Edeh, who was unavoidably absent.
Nwigbo said the visit was part of the committee’s assessment exercise which commenced in July 2026 and had covered 16 local government areas before concluding with Nkanu East.
He said the team was interested in assessing projects executed by the Enugu State Government under Governor Peter Ndubuisi Mbah, as well as projects undertaken by the local government chairman.
According to him, the assessment would be used to rank the local government areas based on their performance in areas including electrification, healthcare, roads, education and other infrastructural development.
Nwigbo said, “His Excellency, Mr Peter Ndubuisi Mbah, is doing marvelous projects in Local Government Councils. We want to see them as well as the projects executed by the Chairman himself.”
Among the projects highlighted during the assessment were 14 Smart Schools constructed in Nkanu East, with three already functional in Owo, Amaechi Idodo and Ubaha communities. The remaining schools are expected to commence full operations with the September school resumption.
The team was also informed that 14 Type-2 hospitals had been constructed by the state government in the council area, with 13 currently functional and one still under construction.
Speaking on projects executed by the local government administration, Rev. Okoye said the council chairman had renovated the council pavilion, which was reportedly in a deplorable condition before his administration assumed office.
He also listed the construction of a 500-capacity hall at the local government headquarters, the asphalting and completion of an 11-kilometre road, establishment of an estate farm, grading of roads across several communities and the completion of the Ojorowo Bridge linking Igboka and Nara communities.
Other projects, according to the Secretary, include the construction of a primary healthcare facility in Umuisu community and the provision of 14 motorcycles for local vigilantes.
On workers’ welfare, Okoye said the council had continued to pay workers’ salaries as and when due, while more than 500 ad-hoc staff had also been recruited and placed on a monthly payroll.
Following the presentations, members of the tripartite committee embarked on an inspection tour of the projects across the council area to physically verify their existence and assess their level of completion and functionality.
The exercise is expected to form part of the committee’s final assessment and comparative grading of the 17 local government areas in Enugu State based on their performance in key sectors and infrastructural development.
