Security operations in parts of Oyo State have come under fresh pressure after armed bandits reportedly stormed an Operation Burst base along the Igbeti–Igboho axis and set fire to part of the facility.
The attack occurred between 5:30 a.m. and 6:00 a.m. on Sunday, September 13, 2026, at a security base located within a forest reserve in Oorelope Local Government Area.
According to a security update from the Oorelope Local Government Command, the attackers arrived in large numbers and opened fire on personnel stationed at the base with powerful weapons.
The assailants were reportedly attempting to overrun the facility, kill the security personnel and seize their weapons.
A distress call triggered the mobilisation of security operatives from the command and other sister agencies. However, by the time reinforcement teams arrived, the attackers had fled.
A subsequent search of the surrounding area failed to lead to the arrest of the perpetrators.
Although no casualty was recorded, the attack resulted in significant damage to the security facility, with the attackers allegedly setting fire to a block within the base and a patrol van.
The incident has raised fresh concerns over the security situation around the forest corridor, particularly the ability of armed groups to launch attacks on established security positions.
Security personnel are continuing efforts to track the attackers as investigations into the incident progress.
The Oorelope Local Government Command said additional information would be released as more details emerge.
Attempts to obtain comments from the Commander of Operation Burst in Oyo State, Col. Olayinka Olayanju (rtd.), were unsuccessful as the available telephone numbers could not be reached.
