Anambra State Governor, Prof. Chukwuma Soludo, has granted clemency to former native doctor Chidozie Nwangwu, popularly known as Akwa Ọkụkọ Tiwara Aki, and assigned him a new role in the state’s youth reformation agenda.

Nwangwu, who was serving a two-year prison sentence at the Correctional Centre in Amawbia, was released on Friday following the Governor’s exercise of the prerogative of mercy.

Soludo made the announcement during his visit to the correctional facility, telling Nwangwu that he would be leaving with him.

The development marks more than an early release from incarceration, as the former native doctor has also been given a public responsibility aimed at encouraging youth reformation in Anambra State.

The Governor’s Special Adviser on Youth Reformation Agenda, Dr. Nelson Omenugha, disclosed that Nwangwu would serve as an Ambassador for Youth Reformation.

According to Omenugha, the decision reflects an approach centred on correction, restoration and giving individuals who have served their sentences or received clemency an opportunity to contribute positively to society.

“Reformation in action,” Omenugha said while thanking Governor Soludo for extending clemency to Nwangwu and giving him a new responsibility.

Nwangwu was convicted by the Anambra State High Court sitting in Awka on February 27, 2026, and sentenced to two years’ imprisonment following his arrest in February 2025.

The court counted about 13 months he had already spent in custody as part of his sentence, leaving him with about 11 months remaining. The court also waived fines imposed alongside the sentence following his guilty plea and expression of remorse.

With the pardon coming in September, Nwangwu had only a few months left before completing the custodial sentence.

His release therefore comes with a second chapter: moving from incarceration into a role focused on encouraging young people to abandon activities that could lead them into crime and embrace more constructive paths.

The appointment is being presented by the state government as part of its broader youth-reformation approach, which seeks to combine accountability with rehabilitation and reintegration into society.
