U.S. President Donald Trump has described Iran as the “number one sponsor of terror,” accusing the Iranian regime of decades of bloodshed and mass killings.
Trump made the remarks while addressing world leaders at the 81st United Nations General Assembly in New York on Tuesday.
The U.S. president said he would “never let Iran have a nuclear weapon,” claiming that Iran had developed a missile capable of reaching Europe.
Trump also accused Iran’s leadership of celebrating the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks in the United States, describing the government in Tehran as a “vile regime.”
According to Trump, the United States gave Iran multiple opportunities to reach a diplomatic agreement before resorting to military action.
He said the subsequent Operation Epic Fury had inflicted significant damage on Iran’s military capabilities.
“As a result of Operation Epic Fury, 159 of their ships are at the bottom of the sea. Their economy and weapons are gone, and the only thing left is inflation,” Trump said.
Trump maintained that the military action was necessary to prevent Iran from obtaining nuclear weapons and to counter what he described as threats posed by Tehran to the United States, Europe and its allies.
