The Petroleum Products Retail Outlets Association of Nigeria (PETROAN) has ordered its members across the country to immediately inspect their fuel dispensing meters following a warning by the Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority (NMDPRA) over possible under-dispensing at filling stations.
PETROAN National President, Billy Gillis-Harry, disclosed this on Wednesday during an interview on Channels Television’s The Morning Brief, saying the association moved swiftly after receiving the regulator’s concerns.
According to him, PETROAN convened an emergency meeting of its National Executive Council on Tuesday, which lasted until about 10 p.m., before directing members nationwide to check their dispensing equipment.
Gillis-Harry said several filling station operators had already commenced the inspection of their meters, noting that equipment faults resulting from prolonged use could cause pumps to either dispense less or more fuel than the quantity paid for.
He said the association was committed to ensuring that motorists receive the exact quantity displayed on fuel pumps.
> “PETROAN members will, at all times, insist on making sure that they sell their products one litre for one litre,” he said.
The PETROAN president also advised motorists to monitor the quantity displayed on dispensing meters while purchasing fuel and request receipts for their transactions.
He urged consumers to familiarise themselves with their vehicles’ fuel tank capacities and pay attention to the quantity dispensed at filling stations.
The association, he added, works with the Weights and Measures Division of the Ministry of Industry, Trade and Investment as well as the NMDPRA to ensure that dispensing meters are functional, properly maintained and accurate.
The NMDPRA had warned filling station operators against short-changing consumers through under-dispensing, stressing that defaulting outlets could face sanctions, including the revocation of their operating licences.
Gillis-Harry said PETROAN had taken the regulator’s warning seriously and was already working with its members to identify and correct any faulty dispensing equipment.
