Kano State Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf has called on politicians to make development, governance and the welfare of Nigerians the focus of campaigns ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Yusuf made the appeal on Sunday at the Kano Government House during the flag-off of the distribution of 50 branded vehicles donated by High Chief Government Ekpemupolo, popularly known as Tompolo, for grassroots mobilisation for the All Progressives Congress (APC).
The governor also urged Northerners to support President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s bid for a second term, arguing that the South should be allowed to complete an eight-year presidential tenure before power returns to the North.
According to Yusuf, former President Muhammadu Buhari governed Nigeria from 2015 to 2023, completing what he described as an eight-year Northern presidential tenure.
He therefore appealed to people in the North, particularly the North-West, to support Tinubu’s re-election in 2027.
Yusuf said politicians should avoid character assassination and personal attacks during the electioneering period, stressing that campaigns should instead be centred on candidates’ achievements, policies and plans for the country.
He also called for peaceful political activities, saying the ultimate objective of elections should be the development and welfare of Nigerians.
The governor expressed hope that the country would successfully navigate the 2027 electoral process and that presidential power would return to the North after 2031.
