Presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Peter Obi, has outlined an economic and development agenda centred on tackling corruption, improving education, strengthening security and expanding infrastructure if elected in 2027.
Obi spoke on Monday at a town hall meeting for the Obi-Kwankwaso presidential ticket in Sokoto, where he identified corruption and the management of public resources as major issues requiring attention.
The former Anambra State governor said an NDC administration would prioritise transparency in the oil and gas sector, while ensuring that government resources were directed towards areas with direct benefits for citizens.
He also addressed the contentious issue of petroleum subsidy, saying his administration would consider restoring the policy after dealing with corruption associated with the system.
According to Obi, the focus would be on eliminating leakages before introducing any subsidy arrangement, with the aim of ensuring that government intervention benefits Nigerians.
Beyond the oil sector, Obi said education would be a major priority of his administration, alongside national unity and security.
He also pledged to expand rail infrastructure by connecting state capitals and linking parts of the North-West with other regions to facilitate trade, transportation and economic activities.
On security, the NDC presidential candidate said his administration would work with state governments to address challenges including banditry, kidnapping and terrorism.
His running mate, Rabiu Kwankwaso, also highlighted the security situation in the North-West, saying the region’s challenges required coordinated action.
Kwankwaso said the purpose of their visit to Sokoto was to engage residents and present the ticket’s plans ahead of the 2027 elections. The delegation also paid a courtesy visit to the Sultan of Sokoto during the visit.
The Sokoto engagement formed part of the NDC ticket’s wider campaign activities ahead of the 2027 presidential election.
