Minister of Works, David Umahi, has challenged former Anambra State Governor, Peter Obi, to name at least one Ebonyi indigene he appointed during his tenure as governor.
Umahi made the remarks while addressing the political relationship between Ebonyi State and other parts of the South-East, insisting that Ebonyi people have the right to independently decide what is best for the state.
The minister questioned why Ebonyi people are often regarded as part of the South-East when their votes are needed but allegedly face criticism when they choose not to support a particular political candidate.
According to Umahi, Ebonyi people should not be treated as “second-class citizens” within the Igbo community, stressing that the state has its own interests and political choices.
He said, “Peter Obi should name one person from Ebonyi State that he appointed when he was Governor of Anambra State.”
Umahi added, It seems we are only considered part of the South East when it is time to vote. But when we decide not to support him, people insult us.
The minister also urged Ebonyi people to reject sycophancy and defend their right to make independent political decisions.
We are not sycophants. We are proud Ebonyi people, he said, adding that the people would not return to what he described as the political circumstances of the past.
Umahi further argued that Ebonyi has made significant progress since its creation and should not surrender its political autonomy.
Ebonyi people are not second-class citizens in Igbo land. We have the right to decide what is best for our people,he said.
