Kebbi Govt Accuses Malami of Politicising Insecurity Ahead of 2027

The Kebbi State Government has faulted former Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami, over his alleged attempts to make insecurity a political issue ahead of the 2027 governorship election.

The state governor’s Special Adviser on Power and Politics, Kabir Sani Giant, made the remarks while addressing journalists in Birnin Kebbi on Sunday.

Giant accused Malami, who served under former President Muhammadu Buhari, of failing to adequately utilise his position and influence to tackle insecurity in Kebbi and other parts of the North-West during his time in office.

According to him, Malami had access to the Federal Government and security agencies during his tenure and could have pushed for stronger interventions to protect communities affected by banditry and other security threats.

He further alleged that the former minister did not visit victims of insecurity in Kebbi or provide meaningful assistance to communities affected by the crisis.

Giant claimed that Malami’s renewed focus on insecurity was politically motivated, alleging that the former minister was attempting to capitalise on the security challenges as he prepares for the governorship contest.

The governor’s aide, however, said the present administration had taken several steps to strengthen security across the state, including providing patrol vehicles, motorcycles and other logistics to security agencies.

He added that the state government had also engaged the Federal Government over the worsening security situation, which he said led to the deployment of additional military assets and the establishment of three Army formations in Kebbi.

Giant called on Malami and other political actors to refrain from politicising insecurity, urging them instead to support efforts aimed at protecting residents and restoring peace across the state.
