Market Women, Wheelbarrow Pushers Join Chase to Apprehend Alleged Thief in Awka

Thief in Awka

Tension reportedly erupted at Eke Awka Market after a man identified by people at the scene as Chigozie Dike, said to be from Lokpanta in Abia State, was allegedly caught while attempting to flee with stolen items.

According to eyewitness accounts, market women reportedly noticed the alleged theft and raised the alarm, prompting traders and other people in the busy market to give chase. Wheelbarrow pushers and other bystanders are said to have joined the pursuit, eventually helping to apprehend the suspect.

The man was reportedly accused of stealing a bag containing about ₦300,000 and mobile phones. There were also claims that he had allegedly been operating around Eke Awka Market and the Gariki cattle market area.

However, the allegations have not been independently verified, and there has been no official confirmation from the police at the time of reporting.

The incident comes as markets become increasingly busy ahead of the Christmas shopping season, when large crowds can create opportunities for pickpockets and other forms of theft.

Traders and shoppers are therefore advised to stay alert, keep cash and valuables secure, and pay close attention to their belongings in crowded areas.

While the quick response of the market women, wheelbarrow pushers and other members of the public has been commended, anyone apprehended over an alleged offence should be handed over to security authorities for proper investigation rather than subjected to mob action.
