Chaos in Kenya

A referee was assaulted during the return leg of the Football Kenya Federation (FKF) Premier League promotion/relegation play-off fixture between Kariobangi Sharks and Mombasa United on Tuesday, October 6.

The match, whose winner was to earn a ticket to participate in the FKF Premier League this season, was called off in the 66th minute after United were awarded a contentious penalty by referee John Sulwe at Ulinzi Complex Stadium.

After a United player went down following a challenge inside the penalty box, the referee pointed to the spot.

However, the referee’s decision was immediately contested by Sharks players.

The players confronted referee Sulwe, triggering a chaotic reaction from the home fans, who stormed the pitch and chased the official around the field. Sulwe was reportedly assaulted before security personnel intervened and escorted him to safety.

At the time the match was abandoned, Sharks were leading 2-1. United had won the first leg 2-1 at Mbaraki Sports Club in Mombasa.
