Parents Raise Alarm Over Feeding, Teaching, Welfare at Enugu Government Technical College

Parents of students of Government Technical College (GTC), Enugu, have raised concerns over the quality of education, feeding arrangements and general welfare of students at the institution.

The concerns were contained in a letter reportedly issued by the newly formed Parents’ Association of the school.

According to the parents, while the institution boasts impressive infrastructure, several aspects of its operations require urgent attention to ensure that students receive the quality education and care expected of a technical college.

One of the major concerns raised by the association was the feeding arrangement for students.

The parents alleged that on September 29, some students, particularly those in Senior Secondary School III (SS3), had not received breakfast as late as 2:30pm.

They described the situation as troubling, stressing that students require adequate and timely meals to remain healthy and focused on their studies.

The association also questioned the quality of teaching and practical training available to students, particularly in view of the technical nature of the institution.

According to the parents, students allegedly have limited access to computers and other learning facilities despite the significant investment in the school’s physical infrastructure.

Other issues highlighted in the letter reportedly include repeated charges for uniforms and accommodation, payments for cleaning services, inadequate library facilities and an insufficiently equipped sick bay.

The parents also sought clarification over alleged technical and vocational training stipends which, they claimed, students were not benefiting from.

They further questioned the status of tablets reportedly promised to the students.

The concerns have sparked broader questions about the management of public educational investments, particularly whether attention is being given not only to infrastructure but also to the day-to-day welfare and academic needs of students.

While the construction and renovation of modern school facilities remain important, the parents stressed, in effect, that functional education requires more than buildings.
