African Democratic Congress (ADC) presidential campaign spokesperson Kenneth Okonkwo has defended former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar’s proposal to restore petrol subsidy, arguing that the policy reflects a commitment to improving Nigerians’ welfare amid rising living costs.
Okonkwo made the remarks in a post on his X account on Friday, where he praised Atiku’s economic record and urged Nigerians to support his presidential ambition ahead of the 2027 general election.
According to the campaign spokesperson, Atiku’s experience in government and approach to economic management position him as a strong contender in the country’s political landscape.
Okonkwo, who previously served as spokesperson for Peter Obi during the 2023 presidential election, also cited Atiku’s tenure as vice-president under former President Olusegun Obasanjo between 1999 and 2007.
He claimed that Atiku played a significant role in managing the country’s economy during that period, including efforts relating to fuel subsidy payments and the repayment of Nigeria’s external debt.
The ADC campaign spokesperson further described Atiku as a leader who prioritises the welfare of ordinary Nigerians, pointing to his position on petrol subsidy as an example of his proposed approach to economic policy.
His comments come amid renewed public debate over petrol prices and measures to ease the financial burden on households and businesses.
The Federal Government recently announced a 30-day petrol discount at Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPC) retail outlets, a measure aimed at providing temporary relief to consumers.
Atiku, however, criticised the initiative, arguing that a temporary discount would not address the deeper economic challenges confronting Nigerians. He has also proposed production support for locally refined petrol as a way to reduce pump prices.
The Federal Government has questioned the legal and fiscal basis of Atiku’s proposal, adding another dimension to the debate over how best to manage petrol prices and provide relief to consumers.
Okonkwo concluded his appeal by urging Nigerians to support Atiku’s presidential bid, describing the former vice-president as a patriot committed to the security and welfare of citizens.
The exchange highlights the growing debate among political actors over fuel pricing, subsidy policy and economic relief as preparations for the 2027 general election gather momentum.
