2027: APC Faces Greater Threat From Internal Crisis Than Opposition, Ndume Says

Senator Ali Ndume has said the All Progressives Congress (APC) faces a greater political challenge from internal divisions and the conduct of its members than from opposition parties ahead of the 2027 general election.

Ndume, who represents Borno South Senatorial District, made the statement during an interview on Arise News, where he discussed the ruling party’s internal challenges, its communication strategy and the state of opposition politics in Nigeria.

The senator argued that the APC should pay greater attention to problems within its ranks rather than focus primarily on the activities of rival political parties.

According to him, opposition parties may be vocal and determined, but internal contradictions within the ruling party could pose a more significant challenge as preparations for the next general election gather momentum.

Ndume also expressed support for concerns reportedly raised by Vice-President Kashim Shettima about the APC’s internal situation, suggesting that the party needed to address its weaknesses to strengthen its political position.

The lawmaker questioned the sincerity of some APC members who publicly demonstrate support for President Bola Tinubu but allegedly act differently behind the scenes.

He used a metaphor to describe what he considered inconsistent behaviour among some members of the ruling party.

“You wear that cap in the afternoon, and you trample or you step on it in the night,” Ndume said.

His remarks suggested that public declarations of loyalty might not always reflect the private conduct of some party members.

The senator maintained that such contradictions could undermine party unity and weaken efforts to promote the administration ahead of the 2027 elections.

Ndume also criticised the ruling party’s approach to communicating its achievements, describing the situation as a marketing problem.

He argued that those responsible for promoting the APC and Tinubu’s administration appeared more interested in themselves than in effectively presenting the government’s record to Nigerians.

According to him, the party needs a more coordinated approach to communicating its policies, achievements and plans to the electorate.

His comments come as the ruling party faces the task of defending its performance and consolidating support ahead of the next electoral cycle.

The senator also criticised the wider political environment, arguing that Nigerian politicians place too much emphasis on individuals rather than policies, ideas and practical solutions to national challenges.

He observed that political parties often share similar backgrounds, with competition revolving largely around platforms, personalities and the struggle for power.

Ndume extended his criticism to opposition parties, accusing them of focusing excessively on Tinubu instead of clearly explaining what they would do differently if elected.

He specifically referenced the African Democratic Congress (ADC), arguing that its political messaging appeared to revolve around prominent figures, including former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar, rather than a distinct party identity and clearly articulated policy proposals.

The senator maintained that political parties should communicate concrete plans for addressing Nigeria’s challenges instead of relying primarily on personalities and criticism of opponents.
