A disturbing video reportedly recorded in Nsukka, Enugu State, has sparked concern after a young man was seen brandishing a firearm and firing shots during a confrontation with another individual.
The circumstances surrounding the incident remain unclear, including what triggered the confrontation and whether anyone was injured.
The footage has raised concerns about the use of firearms to settle personal disagreements and the potential threat such incidents pose to public safety.
Questions have also been raised about how firearms come into the possession of individuals who may use them to intimidate others or endanger lives.
Under Nigeria’s Firearms Act, the possession and use of firearms are regulated by law, with applicable authorisation required. Personal disagreements do not justify threatening others with firearms or endangering the lives of innocent people.
There have consequently been calls for the Enugu State Police Command to investigate the incident, establish the identities of those involved, determine the circumstances surrounding the shooting and take appropriate action in accordance with the law.
The incident has renewed concerns about public safety in Nsukka, with calls for residents to resolve disputes peacefully rather than resort to violence.
Nsukka is not a shooting range, and firearms should never be used as instruments of intimidation or as a means of settling personal disputes.
Residents deserve to live in communities where disagreements can be resolved peacefully and where public safety is protected.
As of the time of this report, the circumstances surrounding the incident and any official response from the police had not been independently confirmed.
