Nigeria Democratic Congress presidential candidate Peter Obi has demanded the immediate release of his supporter, Rilwan Olawale, alleging that his arrest is part of a disturbing pattern of intimidation and harassment targeting people who support his political movement.
In a statement, Obi condemned what he described as the continued harassment of his supporters across the country. He called for transparency surrounding Olawale’s arrest, respect for his rights and an end to what he characterised as politically motivated intimidation.
Obi also criticised President Bola Tinubu, accusing him of benefiting from Nigeria’s democracy while allegedly undermining the same democratic principles through the intimidation of political opponents. However, the allegation against Tinubu was made by Obi and has not been independently established.
Describing his political campaign as peaceful and focused on issues, Obi said his movement was built around competence, accountability, justice and compassion. He stressed that his supporters had chosen peaceful engagement over violence and would continue to pursue their political goals through lawful means.
“Civility is not weakness,” Obi declared, warning that his commitment to peace should not be mistaken for fear or a lack of resolve. He insisted that Nigerians should be free to support candidates of their choice without intimidation.
Obi said his movement would remain peaceful but determined to defend democratic rights, while reiterating his demand for Olawale’s release and an end to the alleged harassment of his supporters.
