Sam Amadi Raises Alarm Over Political Violence, Opposition Restrictions in Enugu

Political analyst Dr Sam Amadi has called for greater protection of opposition parties and democratic participation in Enugu State, expressing concern over what he described as growing political intimidation and security challenges under Governor Peter Mbah’s administration.

Amadi made his position known in a statement following a five-day visit to the state, during which he acknowledged the government’s achievements in infrastructure development and increased internally generated revenue but criticised its handling of political and security concerns.

The analyst said he had initially viewed Mbah as a governor with the potential to transform Enugu State but expressed disappointment over what he described as an increasingly difficult environment for opposition politicians.

He raised concerns about allegations of attacks on opposition supporters and disruptions of political activities, arguing that such incidents could undermine democratic participation ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Amadi also questioned reports that a proposed town hall meeting of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), involving its presidential candidate, Peter Obi, and vice-presidential candidate, Senator Rabiu Kwankwaso, had been blocked.

He asked why opposition political activities were reportedly encountering difficulties in Enugu and urged the relevant authorities to ensure that political parties could operate freely within the state.

Comparing the situation with political developments in Imo, Anambra and Ebonyi states, Amadi argued that opposition parties appeared to have greater opportunities to organise activities in those states.

He further maintained that although Mbah was entitled to support President Bola Tinubu politically, such an alliance should not undermine political pluralism or the rights of rival parties.

Amadi urged residents of Enugu State, including indigenes living abroad, to speak out against political violence and support an environment where citizens could participate in politics without fear or intimidation.

He stressed the importance of protecting democratic freedoms as political activities gather momentum ahead of the 2027 elections.
