A Nigerian businesswoman has criticised some Yoruba people who have vowed not to vote for former Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi in the 2027 presidential election because of his Igbo ethnicity.
In a statement circulating online, the businesswoman faulted the argument that an Igbo president would lead to the domination of Lagos and other parts of Nigeria by Igbos, describing such sentiments as misplaced.
She urged Nigerians, particularly those opposing Obi on ethnic grounds, to prioritise good governance and the welfare of citizens rather than ethnic considerations.
The businesswoman also called on Nigerians not to support the current administration, citing the persistent electricity crisis and the rising cost of running businesses.
Expressing frustration over the poor power supply, she questioned the justification for the Band A electricity classification, alleging that consumers still experience prolonged outages despite paying higher tariffs.
She further lamented the financial burden of relying on generators, disclosing that she spends more than ₦100,000 daily on fuel for her shop and vehicle.
According to her, Nigerians are only demanding basic amenities, particularly stable electricity, rather than making unreasonable demands from the government.
She also criticised what she described as classism among Nigerians, questioning why citizens complaining about poor electricity supply are often advised to purchase solar systems, despite the high cost of installation.
The businesswoman further alleged that Nigeria has the capacity to generate about 13,000 megawatts of electricity but transmits only between 3,000MW and 4,000MW to consumers because of inadequate investment in the transmission infrastructure.
She questioned why resources were not being channelled towards improving the country’s electricity transmission network instead of spending heavily on luxury vehicles for political supporters.
