“Great spirits have always encountered violent opposition from mediocre minds. The mediocre mind is incapable of understanding the man who refuses to bow blindly to conventional prejudices and chooses instead to express his opinions courageously and honestly.”
In the build up to 2015 general elections in the country, when Sen. Chukwuka Godfrey Utazi, now representing the good people of Enugu North Senatorial zone of Enugu State emerged from Uzo Uwani local government area, to lead the pack in the Senatorial zone, not many political watchers thought the red cap lawmaker was up with big ideas.
But events happened successively upon his assumption of office as the congressman (like the US would say), who was then a first timer in the red chamber, was handed the responsibility of heading the Senate Committee on anti-Corruption & Financial Crimes – One of the most crucial sectors all Nigerians and indeed the International Community are concerned about.
And to this end, the Eastern Senator’s Stunning performance as head of senate anti-Corruption committee (between 2015 and 2019), no doubt, culminated in the successful prosecution of the war against corruption and battle against other crimes across the nation, under the current President Muhammadu Buhari led-federal government.
However, having enjoyed a glorious one term as senator and Chairman of a very sensitive committee in the country, Sen. Chuka was once again, handed Chairmanship of the Senate Committee on Primary Healthcare and Communicable Diseases, in his second coming as Senator representing Enugu North Senatorial zone, and at a time of biting global pandemic.
Yet, Senator Chukwuka Utazi was not overwhelmed by the daunting responsibility entrusted on his shoulders by the spread of globally acknowledged deadly disease, Corona virus; but was further motivated to work in synergy with the federal government’s covid-19 response team and other joint forces against the pandemic to ensure a safer Nation.
And just recently, when SENATORS from the Southern part of the country, under the aegis of Southern Senators Forum, SSF threw their weights behind the Southern Governors on the total ban of Open Grazing of cattle in the southern part of the country, Senator Chuka’s name popped up once again for a good reason. This time, as one of the most prominent lawmakers among senators from the Southern Nigeria, especially when a statement jointly signed by the SSF Chairman, Secretary-General and Publicity Secretary, Senators Opeyemi Bamidele (Ekiti), Matthew Urhoghide (Edo), and our own Chukwuka Utazi (Enugu), respectively were made available to Journalists in Abuja that fateful Wednesday noon.
Senator Chuka sponsored the motion for sustained immunization to eradicate polio virus, not only away from Nigeria but also in Africa. He was the only Senator among his peers from Enugu who stood firmly in favor of electronic transmission of election results by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), during the debate on the passage of the 2021 electoral amendment bill, especially clause 52(3) by the National Assembly, just a few weeks back.
However, because of time constraints, I will not delve into discussing his numerous constituency projects in this particular work, but suffice it to say that Sen. Chuka, is highly experienced in the business of lawmaking as former deputy speaker of Enugu state House of Assembly. And again, he is well nurtured administrative wise, as former commissioner of transportation in Enugu state. He is one of the best heads ever produced in the entire nation, southeast, Enugu State, Nsukka Senatorial zone and Uzo Uwani LGA in particular.
But we all know the terrible games played by sworn enemies against such highly regarded individual in the society who is neck-deep in bequeathing the younger generation with something to think about. Nevertheless, I live this reader with these words of wisdom from Criss Jami, Killosophy below.
“It’s not about going around trying to stir up trouble. As long as you’re honest and you articulate what you believe to be true, somebody somewhere will become your enemy whether you like it or not.”
Stevenson Davidson wrote from Nsukka, Enugu State.
