Ace comedian and social commentator, Atunyota Alleluya Akpobome, popularly known as Alibaba, has sparked conversation online after stating that a man has the right to withdraw from a marriage commitment even after making a promise.
In a lengthy post, the veteran comedian used the biblical story of Joseph and Mary as an illustration, stressing that circumstances can justify walking away from a promise to marry.
According to him, “A promise to marry is an unbalanced platform to rely on when grave issues are concerned.” He explained that both men and women have the right to call off a relationship if they discover unsettling traits or health issues in their partners.
“Before a promise to marry is tendered, please subject yourselves to genotype and blood group verification,” Alibaba advised. “If it becomes clear later that you are not compatible, don’t listen to any ‘what God cannot do does not exist advisory.’ Flee fast and furiously.”
He went further to highlight red flags such as violence, intimidation, and insecurity, warning that ignoring them could lead to dire consequences in marriage.
Alibaba also cautioned against emotional blackmail after breakups, adding that no one should harm themselves because a relationship ended.
“Finally, it is not by force. Don’t go jumping off any 3rd Mainland Bridge because someone changed their minds. When you get to the next bridge, you cross it. But be alive,” he wrote.
