Abia LGA election: APC rejects results, vows to challenge outcome in court

The All Progressive Congress, APC, in Abia State, has reacted to the outcome of the last Friday’s Chairmanship and Councillorship election conducted by the Abia State Independent National Electoral Commission, ABSIEC across the seventeen local Government area of the State.

Akelicious reports that the Abia State Independent Electoral Commission ABSIEC, has announced Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) as winner of the 17 local government areas of Abia State in the Local government chairmanship election conducted on Friday, December 18, in the State.

Announcing the results on Saturday, the ABSIEC chairman, Prof. Mkpa Agu Mkpa, further declared that the PDP and Labour Party won the councilorship seat poll held across the ABSIEC wards.

But, addressing newsmen on Saturday, the Chairman of the Abia Caretaker Executive Committee of the All Progressive Congress, APC, Hon Donatus Nwankpa, berated the State Electoral umpire and vowed not to accord legitimacy to the just concluded Local Government election in the state.

The Abia APC claimed that the election was marred by large-scale manipulation by the ruling PDP in the state with connivance of the electoral body.

Citing the instance of Bende local government where the police DPO, electoral officer (EO), the PDP agent, Ibeji N. Ibeji, and APC candidate, CY Ekwunibe allegedly endorsed a document that there was no election due to lack of materials.

According to APC, the same was the case in Isuikwuato, Arochukwu, and others. Before the election took place, there was a display of electoral materials by agents of PDP in Ohafia the local government council of the ABSIEC chairman Prof. Mkpa Agu Mkpa.

It opined that the outcome of the election is not a reflection of the will of the people of Abia State as most citizenry were disenfranchised by the electoral commission.

While insisting that the party rejects in entirety of the local government read election results, Abia APC, disclosed it heading to court to seek redress.

The Progressive Party commended her members for exhibiting political sagacity and fighting spirit.

APC while calling on her members to remain calm as the party heads to court to demand a refund of money paid by members of the party to ABSIEC, alleging it was not judiciously utilized.

“ABSIEC exhibited not only incompetence but also exhibited a lack of preparedness. In most cases, there were not materials. In most cases, there were no result sheets, in most cases, they lacked the manpower and capacity to conduct election because there was no preparation for it”.

Reacting to the outcome of the Local Government poll, the Abia State Commissioner for Information, Chief John Okiyi Kalu, described the election as fair and credible and expressed satisfaction with the conduct of the polls and thanked Governor Okezie Ikpeazu and his wife, Mrs Okezie Ikpeazu,for their support and love for Abia youths and women which informed the conduct of two LGA polls within 5 years of the Ikpeazu administration.

Chief Okiyi who was speaking with newsmen in Umuahia after the announcement of the result of the election by the Chairman of Abia State Independent Electoral commission (ABSIEC), Prof Mkpa Agu Mkpa, used the occasion to congratulate all victorious PDP candidates and further described their victory as affirmation of the people’s love and support for the PDP in the state.

On the victory of some Labour Party candidates in the Councilorship election, Chief Okiyi described it as evidence of democracy at work, the fairness that characterized the work of ABSIEC led by Prof Mkpa Agu Mkpa and urged winners and losers to close ranks in order to deliver dividends of democracy to the people as well as support the developmental vision of Governor Ikpeazu
