Abuja Public School Pupils Take Protest to FCTA Over 9-Week Teachers’ Strike

For over nine weeks, all public primary schools across Nigeria’s Federal Capital Territory (FCT) have remained shut, leaving thousands of pupils stranded due to an unresolved crisis over the payment of the new minimum wage to teachers.

In a bold act of protest and desperation, social media activist VeryDarkMan mobilized several affected pupils and turned the entrance of the Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) Secretariat into an impromptu classroom, drawing attention to the prolonged strike that has denied many children access to basic education.

The ongoing teachers’ strike stems from the non-payment of the newly promised ₦70,000 minimum wage and adjusted salaries based on promotional levels. Despite several assurances by the government, no resolution has been reached, leaving public primary school teachers off duty and classrooms locked.

“These children have already missed their last term examinations,” said VeryDarkMan in a widely circulated video. “This is not the future President Tinubu promised. How do we expect them to lead tomorrow without education today?”

In his passionate plea, he called out FCT Minister Nyesom Wike and other government officials, accusing them of neglecting public schools because their children do not attend them. “Most of them don’t even study in Nigeria,” he added.
